Studio INI – Urban Imprint
Urban Imprint, a site-specific installation in the backyard of design space A/D/O in Brooklyn, allows visitors to reshape the physical space through their own movement. The cocoon-like envelopment was created by connecting a floor platform to a canopy overhead. Its boundaries rise, recede, and partially separate as people walk through the installation. A configuration of 400 separate cords on pulleys connects the platform to the roof. Every step a visitor takes is mirrored in the moving roof design. The designers explain that their goal “is to explore the potential of a highly responsive urban space, one that can allow its visitors to feel present and empowered through their own unique imprint.” Instead of people reacting and then adapting to a built form, the structure adapts to them.
