DRIFT – EGO

EGO is a time-based kinetic sculpture created for a production of Monteverdi’s Opera L’Orfeo (1608). Bringing cutting-edge technology to a historical art form, the sculpture is a massive block woven on a custom loom using 16 kilometers of hair-thin Japanese fluorocarbon. Software-controlled motors allow a puppeteer to animate its precise choreography during the performance. The work makes reference to the rigidness of our man-made systems, and their potential to become fluid or even collapse. EGO is a coproduction with the Dutch Touring Opera House and premiered at the Wilminktheater Enschede in January 2020.
